Merry Christmas to the wonderful people who make my life so nice. We begin with a few of the people who came to the cookie exchange at my office. A sweet start! My black bottom coconut cookies won the prize!As you can see the competition was steep.Lauren invited Todd over for an early Christmas on Wednesday since he was going to his families home for the weekend. One on the things she got him was a stocking filled with goodies and how cute it was - matched his new boots!On to making the Gingers and rest of the cookies for the enjoyment of all.Lauren got in on the fun.
Such a cute couple!Time for cards --- we can't get enough of the games - even with football on TV the guys played on...
Time for the annual pyramid. We have a new member this year. Did you notice? We had a mission! We needed more games and so an early gift for Chris and Katie was opened and more games began! If you haven't played it, Settlers of Catan is so fun, an expansion version made it even better.Can't have a Christmas Eve without John reading "The Night Before Christmas." Age doesn't matter in this house!Even Duncan paid attention this year!But not for too long....his tiger was calling.Christmas morning already? The PJ's and the gifts are all in place. Who was the first to get started unwrapping???? He just couldn't wait!Go to Katie's blog to get the full scoop on the attack. It was something!
G&G sent some specialty gifts from Germany.Holly made us all calendars of Rehobeth beach with a group photo. It is so precious! I love all the photos of little reminders of all the special places and fun times. So nice!Eric got another fun project for you know who.After a quick building, Eric starting getting Duncan comfortable with the height. It is high!My favorite - as always - is my stocking with the ornament made just for me. How can it get better than this??? These kids are so creative. I am so blessed! Old Rag MountainTrail

I had the opportunity to climb a trail with some friends the other weekend. It was a gorgeous day and quite a hike! I didn't realize until later that this is how it is described on the Hiking Upward web site:

The Old Rag Mountain hike in the Shenandoah National Park is one of the most popular hikes in the mid-Atlantic region. With many spectacular panoramic views, and one of the most challenging rock scrambles in the park, this circuit hike is a favorite of many hikers.

After hiking over 2500 ft uphill, the views were spectacular!From this vantage point it was hard to believe that the parking lot at the base of the mountain was how high I actually climbed!
Scrambling through all the rocks was challenging -- and so fun...
My legs were sore for a few days after but I am soooo ready to do it again!

Our last little snow storm was so early that the flowers were still blooming through the snow.
Do you recall the big snow storm last winter when Eric worked amazingly non-stop to dig out after the snow to allow Katie to get to the main road so she could get back to work? Well, after this past snow we learned how nice it is to have Todd and his truck in the area. He promises we won't have to go through that again! Won't his truck here come in handy during our next storm!!!

Another day and we spent some time playing Chinese Checkers. Eileen was the big winner!
Later we went out to dinner at a wonderful Italian restaurant. Just look at the sunset.The next morning Janet came by and just look at this sweet car she has had for about 28 years! And that bumper - you can sit on it! Can you believe this is the first car she bought when she go a job as a nurse and hasn't bought another one since than. Wow!Eileen came and we took Mom to see Aunt Dorothy. It was nice to see what Tim and Liza have done to the house too. It looks wonderful!After a treat of tea and coffee we all took the ladies for a walk. Than a nice stop to sit in the front yard under a tree. It was so pleasant!
We than took tons of photos --- here are a few of me and my sisters!Aunt Dorothy even had the puppy join our fun.It was a great day. We ended up going back to the house and having a nice dinner. Marty came over later -- and I forgot to take a photo!
Sunday morning we were off early to go to church with Janet and Terry in Burbank. After Mass we went to their house and had a blast. Joe and Taylor played cards with Mom and Pat Pollard - Joe came up with a great version of Spades that was really enjoyed!Terry was making magic in the kitchen....I tested out the smile meter on my camera and it worked!Of course Joe had to try to trick the camera but Taylor's smile won out!The whole trip was a most wonderful visit. Mom is great and still the inspiration for me.I can't wait for the next visit!

The desire to go "home" is always sweet. I love to visit my family - all of them! I had an easy direct flight out and knew that I would only have time to see family so after I picked up the rental car at LAX, I took a brief one hour stop on the way to do this.....

I just had to put my toes in the water! Than I headed out to see this amazingly lovely lady - my mom. Her wonderful caretakers, Linda and Maria, were there and treated me to a fabulous ice cream birthday cake.

After a long day at work, John came over with his three adorable boys, Jackson, Lucas and Carter. It was great to spend some time with him - he is a fantastic father and his boys and doing so well. I really enjoyed seeing them!

We had cake and even some of the neighbors - moms friends - stopped by. It was a loevly evening. After a restful night, Aunt Dorothy was brought over in the morning by her care taker. It was so nice to visit and look at photos and get these two wonderful ladies together again.

They love each other dearly!!!!

Aren't they amazing! And the weekend has just begun! I am so glad to be here.

I am lucky! Since Chris and I have birthdays not too far apart, we were able to share a birthday celebration. It was a little late for him and a little early for me. Katie and Lauren got to work and put together a gorgeous cake. I love being treated to a sweet dessert and great meal and not a thing to do but sit back and enjoy.

So cheerful!!! I do love that sunshine.....Nothing comes close to being with good people and sharing some happy times. Thanks guys! You are the best!On by actual birthday Lauren got me a balloon and card and candy.... I am getting sooo spoiled!

Katie's birthday this year was celebrated in style with a walking tour of this beautiful manor - just two blocks from our home... Morven Park - the home and resting place of Governor Westmoreland Davis.

I wanted to block a hole in the garden with some rocks so we headed out to the Potomac River - about 2 miles away to Red Rock Overlook to gather just the right rocks. We played in the water and Chris lugged a full bucket of rocks all the way to the car. What a nice man!!!!Thanks for sharing the weekend with me everyone!

Lauren and I decided to venture into the wind and rains and spend some time with Chris and Katie and make sure the epicenter of the big earthquake didn't damage their home or town. Look what was waiting at the front door!Katie had made this adorable sign! We were concerned about being stuck with little to do and look what Katie put in our room....Leave it to Katie to organize a busy fun weekend. We played games and cards. Lauren dominated them all:) We went and picked out a great movie at Longwood University's Library - thanks to Chris. I loved the movie. We watched "The Bucketlist". We went out to dinner and had some great Mexican food. We used Katie's new mixer and made pretzel rolls (among other things). Sooo0 good!We woke up this morning to a practically completed list and a bright sunny day!Thanks Chris and Katie for being such wonderful hosts - I had an amazingly wonderful weekend!After a big drive home we walked into an wonderfully nice aroma... John had dinner in a slow cooker and we were able to eat a delicious meal he prepared on his own!

After Lauren's graduation I enjoyed a treat from the kids for Mother's Day. Eric took his day to drag out from the basement the old bike that Katie had used in school. It had been sitting in the basement with flat tires and brakes that didn't work. He got it up and running and I have been going on some nice bike rides on the nearby bike trail. The weather is nice and I get to enjoy the spring flowers plus it has been a fun way to get some exercise. I love it. Lauren brought me home an amazing bouquet of flowers last week that I am still enjoying today!Sorry I don't have pictures of me soaking in the tub with my new candle and bath salts that Katie and Chris gave me... after a long bike ride it is heavenly! Thank you my wonderful children!

Congratulations to Lauren! She graduated yesterday from James Madison University with her degree in Business Marketing.We had a great day! Up early to Harrisonburg and the graduation at 9 am. The day was beautiful. Here are a few photos outside the hall just after graduation.We went to Lauren's house and celebrated with some of her friends. The house was busy with people coming and going and eating and just celebrating her wonderful achievement!They also like to party on the roof! and the front swing!Congratulations again Lauren! What a wonderful Easter weekend... I always love being surrounded by the most wonderful young adults in my life!

Lauren came home - proud of her newly repaired car - it looks great!Our biggest entertainment for the weekend was - as usual - Eric and Duncan. We can't get enough of his tricks and just the cute things he does. He was riding around like a Pharaoh Twister and he get along a bit more each vist.Lauren can never get enough one on one time with him. He is adorable and just so friendly!
Katie and Chis set the tone with the games: Pictionary, Spades, Rummy, Onzie... and more. Eric got in a bit of hockey - watched the Capitals win their tournament got his own stick out for a bit of practice.

Easter morning turned out beautiful so after coffee on the deck we decided to toss the football and take a little hike.Up to the Audubon Nature Center Happy Easter - Hope yours was wonderful as well!

We were able to celebrate two birthdays this weekend. Lauren's birthday was a bit delayed and Eric's was a few day's early but it was nice to be together. The cake was "Duncan" themed because Lauren is the one who found him and insisted that Eric would love him for a Christmas gift. We were all skeptical but she was right... he loves him!
They were able to share a cake and it made blowing out the candles a breeze!The theme continued with Duncan getting right into the center of the gifts!
Sunday was the Super Bowl and we enjoyed the game - no pictures but the food, the game and the group made it a wonderful weekend.

The time went by fast. I am thankful that the kids could spend the holidays with me. It was fun watching this little one an his antics. This is the first picture of Duncan in the car bring him home to our house.
One of his favorite things to do was climb up the tree - but he needed help getting back down:)Katie and Lauren helped make some amazing cookies this yearKatie decorated our family while Lauren did some abstract designs - fun!We did get out some but also had many opportunities for the games!Our yearly pyramid is always a must.Each year John reads "Twas the Night Before Christmas" but this year it had a new twist:

Christmas morning was a treat with the stocking stuffed and the fire warming the room.Everyone enjoyed some surprises. One of my favorite moments is opening my stocking and getting the home made ornament from the kids. This year Lauren made a sled (from pieces of wood) with the kids as snowman! It is adorable!Merry Christmas and Happy New Year - may we all appreciate all the joys in our lives.

I can't say what it means to me to be surrounded by these amazing people! Eric brought out the guitars and we started the weekend with a song fest! Everyone was joining in:)The annual turkey bowl was fun. Katie even climbed some high thing to get some amazing photos.Lauren kept a close watch on the yard lines
We all made it over with Chris getting the farthest kick of the day at 40 yards!Time for some cooking. No one can make an apple pie like Katie!I made the cornucopia but it would be plain with Lauren's finishing touch with a braided edge.I put Mark to work carving the turkey. He did a great job and earned his dinner!
The food was laid out and everyone dived in.And what is Thanksgiving without the after dinner nap by the fire?
A great way to end the weekend was to have Lauren help with the decorations on the tree! - I am ready for more family time!

It is funny how the seasons bring such similar moments each year. I was driving down the driveway heading to work the other day and just had to stop and admire the leaves! Today I took out the rake and went to work. The pile for the recycle truck got pretty high!Looking down the street, there are still some nice bright colors but in a few days they will all be gone.Is fall almost over? It is such a simple thing but the first smell of these coming out of the oven warms the house! It is definitely a tradition in our house.I even bought several gifts this weekend to get started with my Christmas preparations. The time keeps flying by!

It was a quite night at our house but the days before were fun and set the mood! Look at the beautiful fall colors!A trip to Harper's Ferry WV enabled Heather to check off another state and the girls to become Jr Rangers in yet another National Park!The ranger gave instructions and a booklet for the girls to follow. They researched the clothing and stores of the period,Visited a museum about John Brown's raid,Studied the changes the town had gone through over the years,Leaned what the C&O Canal was for,Watched some trains go by -- Losiah waved and yelled at the conductor.Everyone enjoyed the views! Finally they took the oath and earned their badges! Very impressive!!

Now how do you happily have three children carve one pumpkin??? Heather solved the problem-- they each choose a feature: Sohaila did the mouth, Seanna did the eyes eyes and Losiah did the noise! And they quickly got to business!It was adorable!Thank you for the jack-o-lantern guys!

How lucky are we! Carlos's tour brought him up to Virginia and we got to enjoy his whole family! Since they were staying with the kids I thought I would unpack Katie and Lauren's favorite toys from years ago. Seanna was able to have a birthday party on the porch! (Thanks Grammy!)Sohaila was busy organizing all the home schoolers by their ages!Losiah kept us all running and loved going to the park! The alphbet garden was fun - he found all the letters of his name!They even stopped for a dance!
I was absolutely thrilled to be able to see Carlos open the concert. He can connect with the audience! Wow - if you ever get the chance you need to see him play. He is not the same Carlos with a guitar around the camp fire! I didn't get a photo of him on stage but after, the crowds couldn't wait to buy a CD and get an autograph.The kids were helping and Losiah was telling people "Buy my Daddy's CD!"Heather was visiting with some blog friends too. Everyone knows her!What an wonderful sweet family. Looking forward to your return visit after the NY adventure!

My birthday weekend

What a gorgeous time of year - and a wonderful weekend! The kids came home and I had a blast. We went down town for a walk and had some unsweetened frozen yogurt - it was good! Saw this old time fire truck drive by too. Later we broke out the cards and it seems that the guys get much more involved when the poker chips are brought out!
I am proud to say that the girls cleaned house!!! I was treated to a wonderful birthday cake. Katie did the decorating and the cake was delicious.

The next day we took in the beautiful day - just look at the leaves - the views - it was wonderful Eric found many climbing opportunities:)I am a happy Mom! Thanks guys!

Can you believe it is the end of August! Lauren is back at school, Katie and Chris have gotten settled into their new home, Eric is back in PA preparing for another hockey season and work is in full swing. I am back to my routine of cleaning up bank owned homes, having moldy carpet and drywall and trash removed... I have recently sold a couple beautiful homes to families taking advantage of these amazing 4.25% interest rates!

I also was able to sit in on a focus group panel on our MRIS system and was giving a new toy for the effort. Can you believe it!
Now someone just needs to let me know how to use this Apple iPad. I have never used an MAC system - I need help!

Quick 1 hr B-day last weekend!

Katie and Chris and Jennie stopped in after we picked them up from the airport last Sunday. They were exhausted from the wedding in Chicago the night before and an early flight the next morning. They had to head down to take Jennie back to Charlottsville and than down to Farmville where Chris had work to do before Monday morning.

I grilled some steak and we have a quick "linner" (Katie's term for lunch/dinner). Potato salad, corn and steak sandwiches with grilled vegetables. She open a few gifts.Than time to sing happy birthday and have some cake!
It was a quick birthday stop... they even took the cake "to go!" It was nice to be able to celebrate with you Katie!

Remember long ago when we cleared out the overgrown plants from out front yard? Here is a picture - you could hardly pass through the bees in the holly bushes to get to the front door:We had them removed a while ago and it's been a blank slateI had planted some bushes but the weeds took over and it never looked finished.

I finally had someone come help plant some things and finish the edges. It turned out pretty nice. They were working on it for a couple days.
We have some roses around the dogwood tree.We even added a stacked stone wall. They had to add dirt to fill in all the opening under the porch that had settled.They were moving dirt all around the house Everything was looking good. That night after they finished laying the mulch, Leia, our cat, did not come in as usual. She sometimes spends a night outside. I watered all the plants and called for her but she didn't show up.

The next morning she did not show up. She normally pesters me for her canned food in the morning and is always at the door if she spent the night outside. I figured she was scared away for a bit from all the landscaping activity. But that night, I came home from work and she still didn't show up. I watered all the plants again and was getting worried. She hasn't been feeling up to par - not eating well so I was very concerned. I walked the neighborhood looking for her and set out more food. Still no cat.

The next morning I checked and she still wasn't anywhere to be found. When the landscaper came later to pick up his check - he was checking all the plants and said "oh my" you might have a ground hog - look.I told him that it must have been Leia, my cat! He said you can tell nothing was digging to get into the hole so the cat must have been under the porch when they filled in the mulch! They buried her! At least I knew she had gotten out! I still had not seen her. I went to work and when I drove up at night - there she was eating the food I had set out on the porch.

She was hungry! She must have a little cave under there. I wanted to block it up but Eric suggested we make a little stone entry to her cave:) It keeps her warm at night and dry during the rain storms!

Holly Lake Ranch, TX

They were so excited! Katie and Chris have been planning, for quite sometime, to visit with Grandpa and Grandma in Texas. They are also bringing along Chris's twin sisters, Ashleigh and Jessica, for the week long adventure.

Lauren had to work so wasn't able to come along. After a whirlwind of "is she or isn't she", getting up at 5:30 am, Lauren did jump in the car with them. Work was covered and she is thrilled to be able to go too. They are all so excited - off to ....

Furniture fun

I have a friend who is downsizing and was selling off some extra furniture. So exciting because I don't like to go out furniture shopping. I picked up this table and chairs and a few other pieces. My dilemma is that we are a very casual - card playing - sit around the breakfast table - kind of family.

I am looking for your opinion. Some say the new table is too formal for the breakfast area. What do you think? This is the old table - very comfortable boxy oak with a Formica top:This is the new (used) one: It is a pretty table but doesn't feel like my kitchen! I also picked up this cute little table and chair for my laptop. I love it!And - this antique side cabinet for the dining room. So fun!I even got two wing chairs, an end table, a full bed for Lauren - she still had a twin - and a lamp.

What do I do with the table? The girls love it and the guys say it isn't comfortable enough. I could keep it and redecorate more to make it fit or store it until one of the girls has a house to put it in!

Okay, I bought our plane tickets a bit late -- the early flights kept increasing in price so I ended up with us arriving at 10:30 pm on
Saturday. I figured that's not too late. Well, in Redding CA it IS too late. There is not one car rental place in town that rents cars --- even at the airport --- after business hours.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Do you think anyone could get us or do you think we could get a taxi for 5 of us at that time? Thanks everyone!

Sunday afternoon fun

It was a stormy day - than too hot to work outside so I asked Lauren to teach me some of her art techniques for pencil drawings. First we had to go through magazines to find a subject. Here is what we began with:My drawing was so sketchy compared to the detail work Lauren was doing. I decided to draw her as well. John says she looks evil - guess I have to redo her mouth:)The day is done and she is still in progress but look at the detail. It looks so fine in person!

Memorial Day weekend

What a beautiful weekend. I so appreciate all those who have served our country. I can't begin to express my gratitude. So many in our family have served (John, Grandpa, Matt Hall, Mike Conrad, Mike Conrad Jr, Chris's dad - Bob Stratton...and more to come...Michael Conrad III). Thanks guys!

We took a walk through downtown Leesburg and visited the memorials. At our courthouse there are memorials for WWI, WWII, Vietnam and The Korean War. After the walk through town we headed home.The girls walked home while the guys drove back - worn out after the day on the golf course.

Eric brought a friend's projection HD TV to see the first game of the Stanley Cup. Wow - they moved furniture and created a home theater in the family room!

Everyone was helping. The guys brought in the couch from the living room so there would be plenty of seating. We put a sheet up on the french door so the the light would not glare.
It was great! Lauren was able to really get into her part supporting the team! Katie and I make some hockey puck cookies (thin mint variety). Delicious!You could see so well - the screen was huge!The score went back and forth until 5 to 5 and than the Black Hawks got the final score -- so sad! On to game number two tonight....

The next day we hit the pool. A new out door pool opened in Leesburg last year and it is really nice - water slides, lazy river, lots of fun!

Next we celebrated John's birthday - just a little late. He loves chocolate and his cake was chocolate through and though.He even got a gift from Dad and Linda that they found in Turkey - a treasure chest for his silver coin collection! Just fun!

Okay - my life is pretty mundane and quiet as you can see from this blog until my kids are around. Again this one is about one of my kids who is around!

Eric has been on her to wear the Jersey he left here to support the Philadephia Flyers in their quest for the Stanley Cup. She has been doing her part!As you know, Lauren had the 1st step of the surgery for an implant, last week on Friday. The doctor gave her Amoxicillin to prevent potential infections. She has been taking it regularly since than. Two days ago she got a little rash and thought nothing of it. This morning she woke up and was ravaged all over! Her body - legs - back - head - like this!Even the bottoms of her feet!And what do she do??? Puts on the Jersey to support those Flyers -who at the moment are 3-0 in game 4!You better thank her big time Eric!

The last time I was in Pennsylvania we were helping Eric move in. This time we were able to enjoy a visit and the area. Eric took us to this neat shopping area and we had lunch.We went to a park and took a walk along the river. Sister Support -- Flyers!

After a having oral surgery today for an implant - stitches, swollen gum's, painful mouth -- she still offers support for her brother in PA who asked her to go get his Flyers Jersey and put it on. They were down 2 to 3. Shortly after she got it out...... SCORE!!!
What a sport. I hope they can score one more! Thanks Lauren!
And they won the series - unbelievable after being down 3-0. Eric told her she needs to wear the jersey and watch every game until they win the Stanley Cup!

There is nothing like spending the day with the kids - who have all become the most wonderful adults! The day was beautiful!

Eric had signed up for a 5K walk for Ovarian Cancer Research. The kids all left early for the walk, and afterward stopped at the farmers market and got some fresh bread for dinner and kettle corn to snack on before. They came home and we played some Wiffle ball - I hit a home run on the roof!Chris - I missed the picture of you hitting the ball OVER the roof to the front yard!

We than went inside and played a marathon Onze card game. It was a lot of fun! Eric than got to work on his special marinadeThe girls worked on the fresh bread and salad while Eric grilled.We had a fabulous dinner... and I didn't do a thing!In the morning the counter was filled with gifts and cards. I have a beautiful new blouse and a great summer beach bag! I feel like the luckiest mom ever!

It doesn't take much to make someone feel special.

John has been taking some appraisal classes down in Richmond. He was at a three day class and was checking into a Hampton hotel on Wednesday after a long day of classes. When he walked into the lobby - there was a big welcome sign with his name on it! It said welcome John Hall - our guest for the day! How fun! They gave him the best room in the hotel, complimentary breakfast in the room, some wonderful chocolate truffles - and he felt special for the day!

I saw Katie's blog and she is right! I took these photos yesterday. After record snow falls the first of this year - this weather was a surprise!At 6:15 pm the temperature was still 95 degrees the first week in April! Tonight we have thunderstorms and it is suppose to cool down.

Family - good weather - good times! Who could ask for anything more? The kids all traveled hours to come home for just the one day!

After a quick lunch we took a walk near the house and I couldn't believe it but the kids said they didn't know this pond was here! Less than one mile from our house!Eric brought the football to liven up the walk. Chris and Eric tossed it everywhere we went We stopped for a picture along the way

Delayed cake?? Why not! Lauren wasn't home for her birthday. She wasn't able to come home during the big snow storm when we had planned to do a cake for her and Eric together. So --- this past weekend she was home and I said - why not!

Lauren had planned to go see Alice in Wonderland with Brian the week before but it had sold out. We decided to go see the movie in 3D. It was fun. The Wonderland theme won out...Cheshire Cat made an impression on us! You can hardly tell what the cake is but Lauren and John got into the theme quickly:Now the real fun of a birthday cake comes as Lauren's nerves start running high as the candles are lighted See did it! The excitement shows!Happy 21st year Lauren!

I have the most generous, fun, adventurous mother and father in law ever. These two people never cease to amaze me. The have a zest for life! Everywhere they go they have adventures and crazy - fun stories to share. We were lucky to have them come visit and what a trip they had. After flying in - they took several weeks and went to visit Katie & Chris in Farmville, Lauren - at the Girls House at JMU, than they saw relatives in Southwest Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania. They than went up to see Eric in Bethlehem and also went to visit the place they had their first date in Ananpolis, Maryland.
By the time they came back I couldn't wait to hear all the stories.

One funny story was a call from Linda on the road telling me to watch the mail for an envelope from her sister. Grandpa left his credit card at the Applebees in Lexington. Linda says this is a reoccurring event whenever they go to Applebees! Then Grandpa went on the tell how driving the PA Turnpike, Linda's only mission was to hang on the the toll ticket and let him know where to get off. While Linda was looking at the map, somehow she lost the ticket and they couldn't get off the turnpike! Grandpa had to get out on a very busy dangerous highway in the pouring rain and risk life and limb to search through the car and under seats until they finally found it caught so far under the seat that he could hardly get it out! They were laughing so hard! Of course Grandpa remained calm the entire time! Ha ha!

Lauren came home for spring break so she was able to see Grandpa and Grandma another couple days back at our house. Katie had mentioned to Linda that Lauren has been eying screens for a while. The first thing Linda did when they came back from the driving trip was to take Lauren out to Pier One to pick one out. Take a look at this great looking surprise:
We loved their visit! John took Grandpa hiking up at Harper's Ferry one day. I loved the card games at night. They even took us out to dinner so I didn't have to cook after work.

One day we were watching a William and Mary basket ball game on TV and there was Chris and Katie right behind the bench! Here is a photo of them on TV! I know - it is hard to tell but it is them!
I am always inspired by these two! They are the best! So much fun...Thanks Dad and Linda! We love you!

Morning surprise

Another great thing about California, besides the great people, was something of a surprise I ran into the last morning of my visit. Your need to understand, I have been buried in snow, frozen pipes, collapsed roofs from heavy melting snow, leaking windows and walls from gutter ice dams and on and on.

I slept in Aunt Dorothy's room and heard a tapping sound in the bathroom that she and I thought was a dripping faucet. I realized the last night that the sound occurred when the heat was on. I went out before breakfast because I had to leave for the airport early. I wanted to see if there was a vent that might be stuck outside near her bathroom. I didn't find the reason for the tapping but found thisThe grapefruits where ripe, huge, juicy, sweet and falling to the ground. I picked a couple for a wonderful addition to our breakfast.
Mom said she had always enjoyed the neighbors sweet grapefruit so she saved the seeds and started her own tree. She planted one for herself and gave out starters to friends she was working with. She loved the fruit for years but unfortunately she can't eat them anymore because of her diet. I loved mine though! Nothing like eating it fresh from the tree!

Well the pictures can't tell the whole story but the event started when I drove from the airport to the mall to see the twins finishing up their hair appointment. They looked great!
Next, we were off to get nails done. Do you know that this was the first manicure Aunt Dorothy ever had!!We headed back to the house to help Melanie with the centerpieces. She took Linda's idea of putting photos of the twins around the flowers. She did an amazing job and they turned out so cute.The next morning we got ready and couldn't wait to get to the party. Here come the twins!Family and friends gathered and the dancing began.

Eileen put together questions for everyone - "Who knows the twins best" and "What happened in 1922". It was fun and the prizes where creative too like $2 bills and a other 1922 gifts. It was fun for all!

The cake was delicious - chocolate with cherries just like Aunt Dorothy wanted!Some of the cousins found a nice little table to play some cards.
We just didn't want the day to end!
Everyone headed over to the house the next few hours the twins opened gifts!The house was so full of joy for these two wonderful woman. Happy Birthday Mom and Aunt Dorothy!

I just got home from a whirlwind weekend and am am so overwhelmed by the amazing family and friends that put on this wonderful party for Mom and Aunt Dorothy. These two ladies are so sweet, appreciative, supportive, loving and always ready for a good time!

It was such a treat for me to stay with them for the weekend and be a small part of the preparation and all the festivities. I am exhausted but so thankful I could be a part of the celebration. More too come after a nights sleep....

I can't wait to leave in the morning to come to Mom and Aunt Dorothy's 88th birthday party! I was so impressed with the great invitation Janet put together. Just go here to get an idea of what it looked like.

John's parents arrived two days ago. Their plane ride was fine but no suitcases arrived! Here is a picture of Linda on TWO phones trying to track down those bags.
She did it - and they arrived to our house by 10:30 pm! I am not taking any chances and carrying my bag with me.

The weather here in in the 20's and I am headed out to - current temps of:
West Covina and 71 degrees , partly sunny!!

More snow!

Katie did a great job giving the details of how she got out with all that snow here. I thought I would share just a few more details.

Eric started out the morning early with this desire to fulfill his promise to Katie that if she came out for the weekend he would guarantee to get her out to the main road no matter how much snow fell. It was about 9 am when he started the job.
A little while later Katie and I came out and they started working out the plan:

Many hours later, John helped push to make sure Katie's car would make it out.
Than off she was for a three plus hour long drive on roads like this... I was a nervous wreck!
But she made it safely and the roads improved as she headed south. Several hours after she made in down the road, look what showed up!!!

It took the plow only about 20 minutes to do the entire street!

As you can see - people are preparing for the next storm... the bread isle at the grocery store looks like the milk isle!

Blizzard of 2010

Well I think my entire blog this year is dominated by the weather! Last weekend was nothing compared to this one. Eric and Katie both made it for the weekend visit. More snow than we expected arrived! You can see on the deck the snow piled higher than the last storm!
John was trying to put a dent in the driveway shoveling during the snow storm. We actually hit a total of 35" in Leesburg! It was a record storm!
Eric took over with Chris who came by to help. An over whelming job ahead!

They did a great job clearing Chris's driveway too! Look what we found growing on the front porch! The kids started throwing snowballs at it:)

After an exhausting day shoveling we took a break to celebrate Eric's birthday! If you look closely you will find 26 snowballs on his cake!
Katie played some wonderful background music while I was making dinner. We had a nice evening!

This winter has been a surprise. We have seen more snow this year than in quite a few years combined.

After slipping a few times on the slick roads, for me it has been a nice little nudge to take a day off from work and spend a few hours with a good book. It's a nice day!

I haven't posted a message because we have not been able to celebrate together but Lauren is now 21!!! She came home last night so we could have dinner with her - we went to Tuskies and she ordered a beer!!!
We are going to do a cake for her and Eric went he comes down the first week in February.

Her roommates decorated her room last week and they did an amazing job.

Forgetfulness

My family has had to deal with by many puzzled searches of things that I have misplaced. Some of the examples are:

I misplaced my phone charger, a special dish, a book..... always to be found a day or so later.

Well, with the big snowfall we had just before Christmas, the kids wanted to go sledding. I was sure I had seen the sleds before I put up the Christmas decorations this year. I couldn't find the sleds and figured they must have been thrown out years before - but I was so sure I had seen them. I was taking down the tree last week and --- oh my --- look what I used to stabilized the tree!
Sorry guys! I wish you could have gone sledding!

My Mom

I just wanted to say that my Mom is an inspiration to me. Every time I talk to her she is always so positive, optimistic, and cheerful. I think she is an amazing person. She just went through a big a change with new caretakers in her home and she still just smiles through the phone when ever I talk to her. I hope I can stay as positive as she is throughout my life!

29 Years ago

It's is fun to remember what you were doings years ago. For me - 29 years and one day ago was an exciting time in my life. Some events dramatically change your life and this was the one that change mine in the best way. When I recall the joy and excitement of the days leading up to and the actual day of Jan 3, 1981 - it is hard to express. We have had many ups and downs but the good and happy and the joy are so overwhelming that I feel I am the luckiest person ever.

Katie and Chris arrived a couple days before Christmas. What energy and joy they spread!
We had several days of card games, trivial pursuit and snow shoveling:)Lauren invited Brian to come and enjoy a few days of cards and snow fun.

I am amazed at the condition of some of the homes that I go into. How can people live like this??

The bugs in the kitchen were horrible! Luckily the bank, who now owns the home, is allowing me to have contractors do some cleaning up.

Today I was changing light bulbs to get ready for a closing (the owners are in Georgia) and since the house was vacant I had to climb on John's shoulders to reach the fixtures:)

While the guys were enjoying the football game the girls were busy at the table with a very important mission. They were showing plenty of team support .... notice the jerseys!
After the game we took had a big dinner than took a walk up the hill to make room for cake. It was a beautiful afternoon.
On to some wonderful gifts. My family put together an amazing production - with pictures that Janet and Eileen spent time gathering from many years past-- Thank you both! It is a fantastic dvd which you can see right here!
I hadn't seen many of those photos in many years if ever. It brought many great memories! What a treat! The tissues came in handy!

New eating habits

I just had the most wonderful dinner. I went shopping after work and bought fruits, vegetables, soy bean nuts, cheese, breads, potatoes and pasta, fish and I didn't even go down the meats isle! My dinner tonight and the past few weeks has been colorful, flavorful, healthy and I don't feel stuffed. John got me started and I am loving it!

Sorry no photo but the corn, spinach salad (with mushrooms green and red grapes, almonds, tomatoes and more) and sour dough bread was great!

Laguna beach & more!

There was so much more to tell. These two were inundating me with gifts everyday! We spent an evening shopping a Laguna - We took every opportunity to set up our timers for the perfect photo:)
The sunset was gorgeous.Back at San Clemente all the food was delicious and beautifully presented... here is a snack Janet put together
A neighbor came by and just returned from a fishing trip and brought us a beautiful plate of yellow tail tuna:
The next day after oohing and ahing over Janet's wardrobe - she said most of the items were from Target so we took Eileen out shopping for a makeover of clothes and makeup. It was a blast!
The last day we shopped the town of San Clemente -
We went hog wild on new scarves:
Coffee in the afternoons with chocolate, biscotti, toffee, watermelon & figs. We shared stories of turning the big 5-0 ... makes it much more palatable!
The water and coast were perfect
And lunch on the pier with a bottle of wine - ah - I need not say more!
An amazing weekend - wouldn't you agree?

Spa day!

Janet and Eileen treated me to an entire day at the spa at the Ritz near Dana Point. Wow! We had a great day. It started out with getting out lockers and changing to do warm up exercises on the elliptical while looking out over the ocean. We did a few machine weights as well. Than the Pilates class started on the cliffs under the gazebo. Beautiful. We stretched and it felt great.

On to our pedicure and manicures. I don't have photos of the spa but our nails looks good!
Next they treated me to lunch by the pool and just look at this decadent dessert:

Picture molding can also be used in conjunction with crown molding, as can be seen here.

Older homes with plaster wall often have a solution to the decorating hanging problem already in place. Many people don't know that the cracks near the ceiling to an older home is not settling but molding placed just below the ceiling to allow for hooks to hang pictures instead of using nails.

Hooks to use with picture molding (Picture Molding Hooks) are available at most hardware stores and on the internet. They are intended to be used with wire, which is also widely available. As you can see in the pictures, high-strength fishing line, is also an option.

Redecorating and moving pictures around is easy!

I consider myself pretty talented at fixing things. I can put together cabinets, install garage door openers and do basic repairs around the house. The other day I dropped my camera while taking photos of a house. The lens was open and the lens dented and would not close. The camera could no longer adjust automatically. I couldn't even get it to close. After considerable effort I did force the lens closed but it would not open after that.

I've been shopping for a camera. Eric was coming home this weekend for Marks graduation. He said, "let me look at it."
This is my reaction when he took my picture a few minutes later!

I had another mixed emotion helping Eric move into his new place (ha - I actually just photographed). It is wonderful. The two Micheal's did an amazing job moving!

July 4th was the best! Katie organized a "Fun Run" in the morning. There were six of us at the tract for to run or run/walk. I am impressed she got the guys away from the Wimbledon match on TV. I am still sore today.

The kids continued on to a game of tennis. Back at the house they moved on to golf...We grilled some ribs, played some cards and two games of Trivial Pursuit.
We walked down to see the fireworks at Ida Lee Park. It was nice day!

We had a nice start to our July 4th weekend with an unexpected visitor! With an 8 hour layover from Switzerland to LA, Joseph got to spend a few hours with us!
John grilled some chicken and we all enjoyed a great evening on the deck. Joe shared some stories of the partical physics experiment in Cern. What an interesting time for him!The girls had not seen Joseph in about 8 years! It was fun to share a few hours. The standard group shot. Eileen - thanks for telling us about his flight!!

So nice to celebrate another birthday. I get to have the kids come for dinner! Lauren brought her friend Tim. Chris and Katie had a busy weekend planned but started at our house. Eric was here between hockey games. We had steaks on the grill and corn on the cob - John's favorites. Of course the cake was "structurally sound" to John's point of view - chocolate on chocolate!
We enjoyed the day - John and I even took a walk along the Appalachian trail later. Hope you all enjoyed Memorial Day weekend!

After a full week of rain it was sunny, low 70's with a nice breeze.

The climb was steep!

This guy traveled all over the world with his recording equipment, recording street musicians playing the same song, and then meshed it into one fantastic and inspiring tune. Just the feat of getting everyone to play it in the same key, in tune and in the same tempo is mind blowing. Very nice job. Music is, indeed, universal.

We got together is weekend and took Eric out to Outback Steakhouse. All went well - dinner was great - until Colby told the waitress it was his birthday so - of course they came and sang "Happy Birthday"! Eric could have done without that attention.

When we got home Eric opened gifts - hockey gear - and a book about finances from Suzie Orman.We had cake - Note the note book computer has a mouse attached!!

After dinner and cake we play cards while Eric cleaned the kitchen! Thanks Eric! Happy Birthday!!!

The adventure of cleaning out the refrigerator

Do the leftovers ever creep up and take over your refrigerator?

I decided to clean out all the left overs (rice, pasta, chicken, pot roast, etc). Down the garbage disposal until ---- the first time ever - my sink backed and exploded on both sides with yuk!! Lucky you - I did not take pictures. The dirty dishes from dinner were all over the place, the left over emptied containers, pots and pans plus the crap in the sink. It would not go down!

After trying the plunge it down for a while, nothing worked. I was about to give up. John said he would help. I remembered my dad used to unstop sinks with getting plenty of hands to hold closed all the drains but one. We tried it; the dishwasher overflow and the other side of the sink I held tight while John plunged until I thought the sink would break off the counter! It worked! I was finally able to wash the dishes. It is so nice to have a working sink!

I just finished reading "Thirteen Moons" by Charles Frazier, the book John gave me for Christmas. I know, it sure took me a while! It is a wonderful book. Have you read anything simply wonderful recently?

By the way - I thought Obama's inauguration speech was great. You can see it hear if you missed it.

Lauren is no longer a teenager!

She came home on Saturday to spend the day with us. Katie and Chris came out to celebrate. It turned out to be a very eventful weekend! I'll start out saying we all enjoyed having a nice fajita dinner and and cat cake - because of Lauren's LOVE of Mowgli.
We had a nice day until I had a camera mishap... Luckily Kate and Chris had their camera with them! She can fill you in with the details.

Lauren - will have to tell you what happened next....
